Applicants should be prepared to answer a few questions about themselves and to submit a short resume and unofficial UWF transcripts. A letter of recommendation may be submitted but is not required.

*All federal work-study eligible students are encouraged to inquire. However, students without previous research experience are given priority.

Students must be federal work-study(FWS) eligible in order to be considered towards the OUR Works! program.

Research Experience and a Paycheck

In collaboration with UWF Financial Aid, the Office of Undergraduate Research presents the OUR Works! program. Open exclusively for federal work-study eligible students; these assistantships offer up to fifteen hours of paid research experience a week. The OUR Works! program aims to introduce students to research and scholarly activities while providing an opportunity for professional development and one-on-one faculty mentorship. All federal work-study eligible students, regardless of discipline, are encouraged to apply through the OUR Woks! Qualtrics application.

Student Projects Ideas

OUR Works! students will receive minimum wage for up to 15 hours per week. Awards are typically made for a full academic year (fall and spring semesters). But awards are made on a rolling basis and so, as long as funds are available, awards can be made at any time throughout the academic year.

Expectations of Award Recipients

Students who receive an OUR Works! Award are expected to contribute to a research project, as directed by their assigned faculty research mentor. They are not required to complete a mentored independent research project, although some participants will choose to do so.

Participating students should work regular hours, as assigned by their faculty research mentors.

OUR Works! students are expected to share their research experience in the UWF Student Scholars Symposium. Abstracts for this event are typically due in mid-February. Students can elect to present their research experience either as part of the High Impact Showcase and focus on the experience or can present research results in a variety of formats, including poster presentations, oral presentations research results in a variety of formats, including poster presentations, oral presentations, research panel discussions, etc. The Student Scholars Symposium typically occurs on the third Thursday of April.

Project SPARK is a federally funded full service Student Support Service Program in existence at the CCBC Catonsville campus since 1980, with the following components: Academic advising, transfer counseling, tutoring, and other resources.

Academic advising

Now more than ever is it imperative that students ensure they are taking the appropriate classes for their selected degree. Failure to take the right classes could result in limitations on, or loss of financial aid. The Project SPARK staff offers personalized assistance with selecting your courses in the sequence that will lead to degree achievement in the shortest possible time.

Campus visits

Project SPARK takes participants to college campuses to ensure students are comfortable with their four year school of choice. If you are already a SPARK participant and would like to visit a specific school please inquire within.

Scholarships

Assisting students with their scholarship applications is something your SPARK counselor can help you with. By visiting Academic Works students can find a variety of scholarships they can apply for, some of which have specified criteria for application. Project SPARK can also help you improve your academic skills so you can meet certain scholarship requirements.

Transfer counseling

Customized assistance in planning now for future transfer to 4 year colleges/universities.

Tutoring

Individualized or group tutoring that becomes an integral part of your schedule as you receive assistance from the same tutor at the same time each week throughout the semester. Tutoring is available for a variety of classes. You can contact us for the SPARK tutoring request form and submit it with any questions you might have to SPARK tutoring.
